Today I want to show you how to edit your pictures on phone quickly, easy and in free application. What we aim at is to change decent shot into a WOW picture. First thing we need of course is a decent picture, as the better the base shot will be the better effect we can obtain.

Ok, let’s get to our picture. I choose the one I took lately in Cape Greco in Cyprus, as it has decent composition and it was taken during ‘golden hour’, which provides nice, warm light (you can read more about ‘golden hour’ here).

This time we are going to use free mobile application Snapseed – it’s easy to use and provides many features. This is typical smartphone app, available both for iOS and Android. If you don’t have it yet, you need to look for this cute leaf icon.

HOW TO EDIT PICTURES ON PHONE

  1. When you open the application you will see this. Just tap around the plus sign to look for the picture you want to edit.

2. You can upload picture from the camera, from gallery and even from Google Drive. This part is very easy, just tap on the picture of your choice once you find it. Uploading may take few seconds if you choose picture from Google Drive.

3.  Once your picture is there Snapseed will propose you some filters (LOOKS) you can use (Portrait, Smooth, Pop). I don’t always use them, but I noticed that Pop or Accentuate work well on landscapes, so let’s use it this time (Accentuate in this case). Once the filter is applied you will see immediate difference, but it’s not yet what we want. Let’s work on it some more 🙂

4. On the bottom of the app there are three options: LOOKS, TOOLS and EXPORT. Looks we already used, export we’ll use later when we are finished, TOOLS are where all our editing options are. I usually start with the first icon ‘Tune image’. It provides control over the most basic editing functions I would normally use in Photoshop or other professional program. Those include:

  • brightness
  • contrast
  • saturation
  • ambiance
  • highlights
  • shadows
  • warmth

All you need to do it to swipe your finger up or down to choose the option you want to use. In order to amend specific parameter you swipe the finger left or right (right to increase the parameter from 0 to 100, left to decrease from 0 to -100). You will see how the picture change as you swipe and observe the bar and numbers over the picture. Remember – zero is settings of original photo.

5. Let us start with saturation, as this picture has correct exposition, so I don’t need to use brightness parameter neither to brighten or to darken it. Saturation controls how strong (saturated) the colors are. If you swipe it maximum to the left your photo will loose all the colors and will be black and white.

I only want to twirl the colors a bit, to emphasize beautiful sunset. I increased saturation +10, but you can try with higher numbers. Don’t overdo this parameter though, as your picture may start to look like a cartoon, and we want to obtain natural effect.

6. Next tool we will use is Ambiance. It’s specific parameter that controls both contrast and lighting of the photo. Let’s say if you want to darken overexposed sky, you can swipe it to the right. It will also lighten the parts of the picture that are a bit darker than the rest. Here, I increased it by +10 to darken and emphasize the sky and clouds.

7. Shadows is very useful parameter, that helps to brighten (or darken) only the darkest parts of the photo. In our case I increased Shadows by +20, so that it lightened the rock and shadows on the left side, but didn’t affect the sky.

8. Highlights have similar function, but they affect the lightest parts of the shot. I wanted to further darken and emphasize the sky, so I increased highlights by -20.

9. Let’s say that we are now happy with most parameters of our photo, but we noticed that there are some small mistakes in composition. The horizon is not exactly horizontal 🙂 No need to worry. Some minor adjustments are often needed, even if our picture looks correct on the camera screen. Let’s go back to TOOLS again and choose Rotate – to straighten and adjust the lines. You will see very helpful grid while you turn the picture, so there won’t be any problem to fix the horizon

10. I also noticed there is a room for improvement when it comes to Composition. If you want to read more about composition and rule of thirds click to this post. No worries, it will open in new tab, so we could still work on our photo here.

Ok, what I want to do is to get rid of small part of left and bottom of the shot, so that the peak of Cape Greco will be exactly in the intersection of lines, according to rule of thirds. From TOOLS I choose Crop option, again helpful grids will show up. You will find choice of proportions that you can apply just below the picture. You can choose between free proportions, original (to save the same proportions as original picture), square, 3:2, and so on. I choose free proportions and adjusted the lines accordingly.

11. Ok, now this is controversial as there are people who love using vignette in photo edition and there are those who hate it. I think that if used correctly, especially in landscapes or portraits, it can add nice dramatic vibe to the picture. After choosing Vignette from TOOLS we can adjust it’s position (by moving blue dot), width (you need to use two fingers to make the circle bigger or smaller) and strength (darker – swipe to the left, lighter – to the right).

12. Our picture is ready 😀 If you want to compare it to original and see all the changes we’ve made you can click this ‘squares and arrow’. Click ‘View edits’ to go back to original or check how each step changed the photo.

Now it’s time to use EXPORT tab. You can share the picture directly to social media or e-mail or save it first. The app will create ‘Snapseed’ folder in your gallery – that’s where all your pictures will be saved by default.
